Why You Will Love These Rainbow Shots

I love drinks that taste as good as they look, don't you?

The vibrant layers of colors make a beautiful rainbow in every glass. Certain to spark oohs and aahs when you serve them!

Beyond their visual appeal, these shots offer a symphony of flavors, blending the sweetness of pineapple juice, the tropical essence of coconut rum, the tangy touch of grenadine, and the electrifying burst of blue raspberry vodka. Each sip is an explosion of taste sensations that will leave you craving more!

    Ingredients for Rainbow Shots

Ingredients: blue raspberry vodka, coconut rum, grenadine, pineapple juice.

    How to Make Rainbow Shots

To prep, you'll want to chill everything. I recommend putting the liquids in the fridge to cool down before making these shooters. At minimum, the pineapple juice and grenadine. But if you have room in the fridge, add the liquor bottles too.

Also, put the shot glasses in the freezer for a few minutes to help cool them down as well. All the chilling helps to cool the drink, since you're not shaking anything with ice like you might for a martini, for instance.

Add coconut rum and pineapple juice to the shot glass. They will mix together, so this is the only layer you don't need to take much care with.

Adding pineapple juice to the shot glass.

Drizzle just a splash of grenadine into the glass. You don't need much, so be skimpy with it. I say this because I've found it too easy to over-pour, leaving me without enough room at the top for the blue layer!

The grenadine will sink to the bottom of the glass on its own.

The final layer is blue raspberry vodka. You want the kind that is actually blue colored, not just blue raspberry flavored.

The blue vodka needs to be carefully layered on top. I recommend using a spoon. You can pour over a spoon slowly onto the side of the glass, or you can fill a spoon and pour slowly from that. Whatever works for you!

Using a spoon to carefully add the blue raspberry vodka layer on top.

The layering might take a little practice, because it will vary by the shape of your glasses and of your spoons. But don't worry, if the rainbow layers aren't perfect you can always drink your mistakes. 😁

    Rainbow Shot Serving Suggestions

You'll want to make these shots anytime you want to add a touch of fun and excitement. Consider serving them at parties, celebrations, or even as a colorful surprise during casual get-togethers.

To elevate the experience, present the shots on a tray adorned with fresh fruit slices or colorful cocktail umbrellas. Your guests will be charmed by the visual spectacle and eager to indulge in these delightful treats.

    Substitutions and Variations

This recipe creates a lovely shot, filled with sweet fruit flavors. But as always, you can experiment with substitutions and variations to suit your preferences.

For instance, if you're not a fan of coconut rum, you can replace it with a different flavored rum or even a clear liquor like vodka. For the blue layer, you can mix blue curacao with vodka (like I did in my rainbow martini) for an even more intense blue color.

And of course you can play with the ratios of the ingredients to achieve different color intensities and flavor profiles.

Get creative and create your own version of rainbow shots!

    Expert Tips

    • To achieve the distinct layers in any rainbow drink, it's essential to pour each ingredient gently and slowly. A spoon can be used to slow down the pour and prevent the liquids from mixing too quickly.
    • For an added touch of elegance, consider rimming the shot glasses with colored sugar crystals that complement the colors of the shots.
    • Feel free to adjust the ratios of the ingredients to suit your mood. If you prefer a sweeter shot, you can add a bit more grenadine or pineapple juice. If you enjoy a stronger kick, increase the amount of blue raspberry vodka and/or rum. Just keep track of your total liquid volume - or find bigger shot glasses! LOL
