Use your air fryer for the ultimate easy button to make delicious Italian sausage! You can have your sausages ready to serve in buns in only 15 minutes, without firing up the oven or grill!
The air fryer has become my go-to kitchen appliance for so many reasons, but when it comes to sausages, it’s been a game-changer. It cooks them quickly, crisps the outside beautifully, and keeps the inside juicy and tender. Plus, there's minimal cleanup.
If you’re in a hurry or just want an easy way to prepare sausages for dinner, this recipe is for you!
Why you'll love Air Fryer Italian Sausage
In the summer, I like to grill. But at the height of summer, I don't even want to step outside long enough to light the darn grill, much less stand in front of it to cook!
That's where this recipe comes in handy. When its either too hot or too cold to go outside, the air fryer will make perfectly cooked Italian sausages every time!
Ingredients needed to Air Fry Italian Sausage
- Italian sausages
- Oil for air fryer basket
How to cook Italian Sausage in Air Fryer
- Using your air fryer is really just a matter of time and temperature, so let me make it easy for you: 15 minutes at 400℉.
- This recipe is adapted from the one I have for air fryer brats. Because they are all just sausages, when it comes down to it. 😁
- I like to lightly brush the basket with some cooking oil to help prevent sticking.

- Place the Italian sausages on the air fryer basket, leaving a little space in between if possible to help promote a deliciously crispy skin.
- Then air fry for 15 minutes at 400℉. Use a digital meat thermometer to verify doneness, the internal temperature should be at least 160℉.
- And it's as simple as that! Your sausages are ready to serve!
Serving Suggestions
Serve these sausages with all your favorite sides! Coleslaw and potato salad are classic choices, and a delicious salami pasta salad is always welcome on my plate!
Feeding a crowd? A big bowl of sweet and creamy macaroni salad will please every palate!
I like to toast the buns lightly and then of course add condiments to taste.
Variations
I always use sweet Italian sausages, but feel free to explore some other flavors. You might like to try a spicy Italian sausage. Or lighten it up a little with chicken sausage. All are easy and delicious in the air fryer.
Italian Sausage Air Fryer FAQs
You have 2 options here. One is to go ahead and overlap the sausages and cook as specified. Be sure to check the internal temperature after the cooking time to verify doneness. The other option is to cook in multiple smaller batches, which is more likely to yield a crispy skin but also will take longer, so it's your call.
My sausages have never burst in the air fryer, but it might be a function of the amount of fat in the sausage or how thick the outer casing is. If you’re worried about this, poke a couple holes in each sausage to allow steam to escape while cooking.
I do not, but it is a good way to prevent the outer casing from bursting, especially if you have experienced this with other cooking methods.
At 400°F(200°C), your Italian sausage will be cooked through in 12-15 minutes. I use the full 15 minutes to ensure a nice crisp skin.
Always verify the internal temperature with an instant-read meat thermometer. The internal temperature should read at least 160°F (70°C).
