I so admire people who make an entire tray of Christmas treats every season. How do they find the time? Fudge, snacks, and a huge assortment of cookies. Easy recipes are the best answer!
As a chocoholic, I tend to migrate to that flavor. But balance is key in your cookie assortment, and everyone loves a good sugar cookie! These blossoms are a simple sugar cookie with a twist: a sugar cookie flavored kiss in the middle.
When I recently made these sugar cookie blossoms, they were so popular! It was a great reminder to me that we chocoholics also need sugar cookie lovers in our lives. It’s all about balance!
Why I love these cookies
I enjoy making cookies for a holiday assortment but some of those recipes need to include an easy button! These sugar cookie blossoms qualify. They start with a sugar cookie mix, so you aren’t worn out from mixing up the dough before you even start making the cookies.
And since the steps are so easy, you can get the kids involved to help if you’d like. My granddaughter loves to roll cookie dough in sugar, which is a key step in making these cookies. Making cookies together is a fantastic holiday memory!

How to make these sugar cookie blossoms
This cookie dough starts with a mix. When you look at the back of a bag of sugar cookie mix, there are two sets of directions. You have a choice of drop cookie and cut out cookie. Follow the directions for the cut out cookies.
I used a Betty Crocker mix, which basically calls for adding a little flour to the dry mix. This helps to stiffen the dough a little so it doesn’t completely spread out when baking.

Once the dough is mixed, simply form it into balls, roll them in sugar (red and green for the holidays) and bake.
Let the baked cookies cool a couple minutes, then press a sugar cookie flavored kiss in the center of each one. Cool the cookies completely on a wire rack.
Expert Tips
When rolling the balls of dough, I used a cookie scoop to get uniform sized cookies. But this doesn’t mean I don’t use my hands – the dough still needs to be rolled before dipping in the sugar. Your hands help to warm the dough, making a smooth ball that the sugar will stick to.
Most sugar cookie recipes do not call for greasing or lining the pan, but I prefer to use parchment paper for it’s ease in handling the warm cookies when baked.
In making any blossom cookie, the kiss is likely to melt some after you place it in the warm cookie. Unwrapping the kisses and placing them in the refrigerator or freezer (I did this for chocolate peppermint kisses) while preparing the cookies might help prevent the melting.
