The 4th of July is rapidly approaching. And if you’re anything like me, you like to make something fun and colorful to celebrate this holiday.

This Firecracker Margarita is the perfect answer! The ideal combination of tangy and sweet, made with bright patriotic colors. The cocktail is a lovely blue which contrasts beautifully with a bright red rim.

Once you try it, you’ll want to save the recipe for all the other patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Patriots Day and even Flag Day.

It’s a delicious cocktail to enjoy any day!

Why I love this blue margarita

Frequent readers of my blog know this: I have a thing for holiday-themed food. And I have quite a few choices for Fourth of July already: patriotic torte, American flag taco dip, and red, white and blue bars. I even have a red, white and blue vodka slush.

But margaritas have always held a special place in my heart. I don’t think I’m alone – it’s one of the most popular cocktails in North America.

To make this blue margarita, the orange liqueur typically found in a margarita is replaced with blue curaçao. Turns out, tequila and blue curaçao make a great combination!

    Ingredients

ingredients: blue curacao, tequila, sparkling water, limes, red sugar

How to make a firecracker margarita

This margarita only requires 4 ingredients, plus ice to mix and sanding sugar for garnish.

Prepare your glass by wetting the rim and dipping in red sanding sugar. Set the glass aside while you mix the drink.

Mix tequila, blue curaçao and lime juice with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into the prepared glass. Top with sparkling water (I recommend lemon-lime or lemonade flavor).

    Sip and enjoy!

    Variations

If you want your firecracker margarita on the rocks, go ahead and include ice cubes in your glass. You probably won’t need much, if any, of the sparkling water to fill the glass. Your cocktail might seem a little more potent, especially at first (before the ice melts) but hey, you only live once!

Similarly, you can blend the blue curaçao, tequila and lime juice with ice in a blender to make a frozen blue margarita. Again, inclusion of sparkling water is entirely up to you.
